What Is Volume Spike?
A volume spike is a sudden jump in trading volume far above the recent average for that market. It signals that something changed: news broke, a large player entered, or a technical level gave way.
Why volume spikes matter
Price moves on low volume are easy to fade; price moves on exploding volume are not. Volume is the conviction behind a move. A breakout accompanied by a genuine volume spike has far better odds of continuing than one on quiet tape, and a spike with no obvious news is often the first public footprint of informed buying or selling.
How traders use them
Traders use volume spikes as a trigger to look closer: which direction is the aggression, is open interest rising with it, is the move confirmed on other venues. Catching the spike early matters most, because the tradable part of the move usually happens in the first minutes.
